A Michigan native currently living in New York City, Sufjan Stevens is a graphic designer, an amateur seamster, a crocheter of ski caps and a writer of short fiction. “A Sun Came” is his first album, released by Asthmatic Kitty Records (1999).
Having recently completed the masters program for writers at the New School for Social Research, Sufjan now works for Penguin Putnam Inc., designing posters beach towels, chip clips, matchbooks and balloons for such mass market writers as Tom Clancy and Nora Roberts. He is working on a collection of short stories.
In his old life, Sufjan played whistles for the Michigan folk quartet Marzuki, which had two LP releases and a grassroots following in Western Michigan, Nashville, and New York City, playing shows with The Drovers, Lost Dogs, Cibo Mato, and October Project.
Other LP appearances include three original tracks on “8.21: a blue bunny compilation,” released by Jai Agnish, of Flygirl; an original track on Absalom Recordings’ “seen/unseen,” a benefit compilation (with Frank Black, Ida, and 16 Horsepower); and an original track on “Eye Of the Beholder,” an independent compilation with Songs:Ohia and others.
Previous performances at New York venues include The Bitter End, Arlene Grocery, CB’s Gallery, and the Knitting Factory.
