Your god seems very vengeful in your songs.
[Laughs] Oh no. There’s no element of revenge in the character of God, but there’s definitely an aggressive joy. He’s not chasing you like a stalker, he’s chasing you like a lover chases you. There’s a lot of aggression in that kind of romance. We pursue things out of reverence, out of our need to worship.
Are you really planning to make a concept album about every state in the Union?
It’s definitely my intention, but it might take 50 years.
Do you honestly think you can write an entire album about Delaware?
I have no idea how to start that one. At some point when all my talent runs out and I start sounding like Paul McCartney, I’ll just start hiring bands to do the other states.
