Press release and information from Marla Hansen:
Marla Hansen, backing vocalist for Sufjan Stevens and The National and violist for My Brightest Diamond, has set out on her own and is self-releasing her debut EP, “Wedding Day.” Sneaking in studio time after hours, during snowstorms, and between fancy commercial sessions at Headroom Studios in NYC, Marla and friends have recorded six songs that, aside from a moment of weakness for a Gibson hollow-body electric, are entirely acoustic. “Wedding Day” features the mellow tones of Marla’s plucked viola and her warm, quietly quirky voice, with help from Shara Worden on vocals, Sufjan Stevens on piano, vocals and percussion, Rob Moose (Antony and the Johnsons, MBD) and Sebastian Krueger (Inlets, MBD) on guitars and Nate Lithgow (MBD) on bass. The EP also features a string quartet, clarinets, melodicas, bells, drums and accordions, all tamed, recorded and mixed by Sam Bair, with the end result beautifully mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Music.
As a member of Sufjan Stevens‘ band, Marla has performed in venues throughout the United States, including the Ryman Theater, the Fox Theater, at Lincoln Center and on Austin City Limits. She can be heard playing viola on “Illinois,” and singing on “Songs for Christmas,” including “Sister Winter.” She has performed with Jay-Z at Radio City Music Hall and with Kanye West on Saturday Night Live. She can be heard on “Boxer,” the upcoming release from The National, and also on My Brightest Diamond’s “Bring Me the Workhorse” and Oneida’s “The Wedding.” Marla has performed her own songs at venues throughout the New York area, including Union Hall, Pete’s Candy Store, and the late CB’s 313 Gallery.
“Using a sweetly dark, creaky voice and plucked viola, Marla Hansen presents an esoteric, vintage sound that’s ultimately irresistible.”
