- “I watched an episode of Laura Weber’s 1969 TV series Guitar, Guitar in which Fahey was a special guest, sitting uncomfortable, mumbling, wiping his hair against his head, smoking a cigarrette, and, when unable to find a nearby ashtray, he uses the sound hole of his guitar instead! I don’t know what was more entertaining - seeing Fahey perform ‘In Christ There Is No East Or West’ or watching Laura Weber fidget in her chair during an awkward dispute concerning whether or not Fahey’s music utilized ‘theme and variation.’ ‘No,’ he said. ‘There’s no variation. I just play the same thing over and over.’ A few years before his death, I saw Fahey open up for Sonic Youth at CBGB’s, wearing biker sunglasses. The crowd chatted over his clumsy lap steel playing, but when he picked up his acoustic and played ‘Oh Holy Night’ the entire city was struck dumb. Afterwards I remember how we all looked at each other, nodding in agreement, not saying a word.” — Sufjan Stevens
